Historicity

This ancient and miraculous image of Bhagawan Sumatinath was found from the open ground of the village 'Sudanja' of the Mahemadavad Taluka. It was formally installed in the splendid temple of Matar in the year 1854 of the Vikram era. Later on, it was renovated many times. When the idol was being taken to Matar, there was a heavy flood on account of rains on the meeting place on the Vatrak and the Rodhi rivers. All the devotees present there, decided to stand there. But the cart-driver saw sand instead of water. Thus they crossed the river without any difficulty, and the devotees made shouts of joy - 'True God'. The idol is, therefore, called Bhagawan ‘Sacha Sumatinath’. Many miracles happened here from time to time.
